Abstract:

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most important additive manufacturing (AM) processes, typically used to process glassy thermoplastic polymers and composites with thermoplastic matrices. As it becomes more widely used beyond prototyping, design for manufacturing (DFM) principles become increasingly important. This chapter discusses the basic design principles related to FDM. In addition to using the essential principles to avoid design and manufacturing problems, DFM can be used for FDM to also take advantage of process advantages to improve design outcomes. In addition to a theoretical and technical discussion of the DFM principles for FDM, this chapter includes several illustrative case studies.
